In March, the 7th graders kicked off TAKS season with the writing test. On April 4-5 our 8th grade will take their math and reading. In the office, we work closely with both the principal and counselor to ensure that everything runs smoothly during test days. We will be helping to coordinate off-campus activities to stand in and relieve test administrators if necessary. We all want our students to perform well on these state assessments, and we are willing to do what is needed to help out students do their best!

This year has really been flying by!

As an incentive to our students, we are hosting an honor-roll award program through Splash Kingdom. Any student who earned all A’s this six weeks will get a free ticket to the water park as a reward for their hard work. We hope that this incentive will push our students to do their best, especially this close to the TAKS testing dates.

Now that all three grades are utilizing the net books, our teachers and students are working hard to learn with the new equipment and systems. In the office we try our best to keep the campus updated with questions and answers from Dr. Rousseau as well as contacting the technology office when major problems occur. We are very excited that our students have the opportunity to learn with such great technology.

With TAKS quickly approaching, it is time to start coordinating tutorials. With the new accountability system in place, it is more important that ever for our students to be fully prepared if we want to keep out Exemplary Rating.

As secretaries, we have worked hard to coordinate a new bell schedule that will allow teachers to work with students with all learning needs in order to achieve Recognized or Exemplary status. We have also worked with teachers, administrators and staff to establish an organized after-school tutorial system that will help students and teachers study the necessary TEKS to increase our passing rate.

With Christmas break approaching quickly, things are very busy in the AJH office.

We have just printed progress reports to be mailed out later this week. We are also preparing the UIL six-flags trip. The students who participate in UIL get to go to Holiday in the Park as a reward for all of their hard work with last week’s events. We are very busy coordinating chaperones; bus drivers, as well as organizing the necessary paper work needed to take students on a field trip. At the end of this week, we are also planning to have our UIL recognition ceremony before the kids go home for the holidays. We will be ready for Christmas break by December 17th.

UIL – Last week our school participated in the academic UIL contests. These events encourage out students to study and practice classroom skills in an out of the classroom environment. Arp JH hosted this event. We, as secretaries, helped to plan and coordinate practices, teams, event locations, and even helped run the concession stand. By allowing students to participate in UIL events, we are encouraging out students to develop skills that align with the TEKS and push them to work hard towards a common goal. Even thought we came in second this year, many of our students placed highly in their individual events, achieving personal success.

Picture retakes are on October 27th so if your child did not have their pictures made you need to get that done. 8th graders had a great time on their field trip to the State Fair on the 12th. Football and volleyball teams are doing great jobs… proud of the kids for their hard work and for the coaches as well. Our junior high will have a Halloween dance on the 30th in the Guy V. Lewis gymnasium. Early release on November 15th and then Thanksgiving holiday will be coming up as well.

Fundraiser delivered on the 13th of October and all was passed out to students or parents. Students did a great job selling products for the fundraiser. Prizes for the ones who sold more than 10 were handed out. Report cards were sent out for the first six weeks and we are getting ready to send progress reports out already; the year is flying by. Students are working on projects and AR points. Next week is “Drug Free Week” and students are able to wear certain things for that. October 21st is “Pink Out” day and students can wear pink that day. Dress code still applies as far as it not being inappropriate.

Oct 25-Oct 29

Monday: Sock it to Drugs! Wear Silly Socks

Tuesday: Twin Day! Because Friends don't let Friends use Drugs

Wednesday: Tie Up Drugs! Wear a Silly Tie

Thursday: Team Up on Drugs! Wear your favorite Jersey

Friday: Spirit Day! Because AJH students are "too bright" to use drugs (wear bright shirts)

Junior High Office Secretaries

We are off to a great beginning at Arp Junior High. We have seen an increase in our enrollment since the beginning of school and continue to get new students nearly every week. Our campus has already completed the first fundraiser of the year and we are in the process of counting the money and turning in orders. We have already mailed home progress report for the 3rd week of the 1st six weeks and the end of our first six weeks is fast approaching and the office will soon print and mail report cards. Yearbook pictures have been taken and we are in the process of getting those handed out to the students who bought packets. Our campus is having a student council this year and we are excited for the students who won the elected offices and are grateful to the ones who ran for office, but did not make it. We think they all have and will do a great job with this.

We have assisted with tutorials by sending out the notices to parents about their child needing assistance getting ready for the upcoming TAKS test. Helping teachers prepare copies for mock TAKS test/practice test/worksheets.
Helping students where needed - setting up times to work with principal for extra math help, giving encouragement for them to do well on taks.

In keeping with our “Rachel’s Challenge” theme, we are in the process of collecting supplies to be sent to Haiti. Our students were challenged to bring a bag containing designated items that would help the Haitians through this difficult time in their country. Participation was voluntary but strongly encouraged. The students were given a list of items to be placed in a gallon bag and brought back to school. We had a total of 75 students participating as well as teachers, staff, and community members. We appreciate the willingness of our students to help those in need!
