November 16, 2009

This week will be a busy week. We are learning double digit addition. Give your child a problem or two and check out how he/she is doing. It is almost Thanksgiving. We have early release on Friday, November 20th. Please have some wonderful Thanksgiving holidays next week. Please include your child on some activity during the week so he/she will have an experience to write about when he/she comes back. Some good choices would be helping cook in the kitchen, helping to rake leaves, clean their rooms, or any other activites that you may do. Please talk about it when you are doing it. Sometimes when you child does something with you, they don't always understand the process of doing things in order to complete a job correctly. Please encourage and listen to your child read. The more practice they get, the easier reading gets for them. I appreciate all the support you give. Thanks so much again. We will work hard this week and enjoy family and friends next week. Remember early release on Friday.

Today is the beginning of the third six weeks. Half of the year is almost gone. Please continue to read nightly with your child. Your support of reading and spelling at home is very important. Please remember to sign your child's folder every night and look over his or her work. Take the work out of the folder and keep it unless there is a note that says please correct on it. If you see your child is struggling with something, please take the time to go over it with them. If you have a concern, please contact me so we can work together to make things better for your child.
Please remember we are having a Veterans Day Program Wednesday morning during Jumpstart to honor our veterans. Please have your child dress in red, white, and blue or whatever combination of those colors you have. Students are encouraged to invite a veteran or bring a picture if they have someone that is a veteran and cannot attend.
Remember report cards go out Thursday and we also have early release at 1:00 P.M.

Week Beginning October 12, 2009

Lots of exciting things are happening at our school.
Starting this week and for the next two weeks PTO is selling spirit squares. Please help second grade have the most spirit by sending your change, dollars, or checks. The money collected will go to help buy the digital sign to go in front of the elementary school.
Also on the October 23rd football game Smokin' Rivers BBQ and Mr. Rivers will cater BBQ plate. The proceeds from this will also go for our sign so please enjoy some BBQ at the game.
October 24th is the elementary Fall Carnival from 4:00-7:00 P.M. There will be a lot of safe fun for your child to participate in. Second grade has signed up to run the cake walk so we will need some cakes donated. The funds made will go to buy supplies for special activities we do in class. Also, please help us with prizes by sending a couple of bags of wrapped candy. Please send the candy as soon as possible so we can put things together ahead of time. Thanks for your support in this matter.
Chili Cook-Off will be at the Fall Carnival. Come and vote for your favorite chili made by the teachers and staff while you are enjoying the carnival.
Tattoos are on sale on Fridays during lunch each week. Small tattoos are $1.00 and large ones are $1.50.
Also please remember we are collecting box tops. This is a great way to support our school by simply cutting that boxtop off and sending it. We have little abc posters for students to stick that on for fun or send them in a bag. Thanks for all we have already received. You are terrific.
Please remember to read nightly with your child.

Week Beginning October 5, 2009

We are beginning a new six weeks. Please check you child's folder everynight and sign it on the calendar. I check their folders everyday and give them a small reward for having it signed. Sometimes, I write short notes and sometimes, I do not have time, but it helps your child see that you think what they are doing in school is important. Also, please take out any work sent home and return any papers that you need to fill out. Below you will find the six weeks spelling list and the six weeks vocabulary list. Continue to study the first six weeks vocabulary list. I am giving the whole list of vocabulary, but we only have five words a week introduced. Thanks for working with your child. It takes us all working together.

This week is the end of the six weeks. We will have benchmark test to finish up the six weeks. The spelling list is on our agenda. Please see the agenda attachment for that list. Also, Oct. 5th is a student holiday, but the teachers will be setting up conferences with each student's parent to discuss their progress this six weeks and the goals for the second grade on this day. I will send home a note or you can respond to this blog when you would like to come. I hope that I will have 100% participation and that we can work together to make this second grade year an awesome one for your child.
