Distance Learning Lab

The components of the Arp ISD Distance Learning Lab include:

----VCON HD3000 Video Conferencing Equipment: Although there are many brands of teleconferencing equipment, any brand will do if it supports the video format you are trying to connect to.
Our VCON HD3000 allwos us to plug in a microphone, multiple screens (1 for monitoring equipment, 1 for viewing - 40" LCD, 1 monitoring recording) and our AverKey (from Computer). The two monitoring screens are on a cart below the VCON unit and the 40" LCD is hung from the ceiling as in pictures below.

Also on this stand is a VCR and DVD Recorder for recording any sessions as needed. Yes, this cart is a Walmart special...as I had it available from home. Probably should have sprayed it black. What do you think?
Monitor Stand Attached above the cart is the 40" LCD. You could have as many Screens as you need attached and hung around the room. This suits our needs.

You will need a computer to run the VCON software and a phone in case you are working on a Webinar or need to call your ESC about TETN session disruptions. We also connect the computer to the VCON using an AVERMEDIA Computer to TV converter (AverKey). This allows someone at the computer to share their Computer Screen with distance viewers. A document camera (AverMedia CP 300) allows the instructor to also share documents or manipulatives.

ComputerI recommend tables for laptops as well.

Windows 7 Features

To run updates in Windows 7 you will need to check for them.

Update IconBy Clicking on the TASK bar (white up arrow) you will find all the additional Icons that are running on your TASK bar. Here you see I need to update my Windows AND my Java. Click on one and finish updating and then click on the other and finish updating.

Follow all on-screen instructions until your updates have completed. For Windows updates, you often have to REBOOT.....AND THEN, you may have to install MORE updates. So check the task bar again and install the rest of your updates. (Update, Reboot, Update, Reboot!!)Hover Mouse

You can let your mouse "hover" over the update Icon to see how much of the updates have completed.

To Install Java & Adobe update you will need a username and password. Teachers may email me for that username and password. You can put this into the login box when it pops up on a student computer. The teacher does NOT have to be logged onto the machine, you just need a special username and password. I will email this to you, please DO NOT share this with students. Make them turn their heads when you type it into their machines.

SWAT Team Examples

Electronic Story (First type out the text and then present with PowerPoint and iSpring)

What an Excuse!

The reason why I didn’t do my electronic story:

First I couldn’t find a camera. I searched high and low but could find no camera. Next when I finally found a camera I couldn’t think up a good story line. I became frustrated and began chewing on random objects. Then my dog Ollie came into my room and distracted me. I tried to fight against the awesome cuteness of the furry critter. Finally I won the battle and slew the vicious beast. I continued on my quest, searching for the perfect story for the assignment. I began to roam the confines of the 12 story castle I was trapped in, in search of inspiration. I was heading up the 4th flight of stairs when I saw a terrifying wild cat! The cat was getting ready to pounce when suddenly a loud noise startled it. As soon as the cat was out of sight I turned to see where the cacophony came from.

Standing at the bottom of the stairs was a nasty witch. The witch began to cackle and point at me. This scared me so I began to flee up the stairs to get away from the crazy witch. I reached an empty corridor and began down it in search of a place to hide. I found a big oak door and leap inside in just as the witches cackling stared to come down the corridor. The room found myself in was pitch dark. Luckily, I had a match in my pocket. I struck the match and turned around to study the room. Suddenly I was face to face with a terrifying, man eating dragon!!!!!

I was just about to scream when a baby dragon came out from behind the big dragon. It was so cute I couldn’t help but pick it up and kiss it. The big dragon told me it would help me escape the castle without being caught by the witch. The dragon showed me a secret tunnel that would take me to the back entrance of the castle. “But beware,” said the dragon “there are many tests and obstacles along the way, if the witch catches you she will eat you!” I hurried down the tunnel straining my ears for the sound of the witch’s cackling. A strange scraping noise made me break out into a terrified sprint. I made a quick turn around a corner and ran straight into something so hard that it knocked me down. When I looked up it was into the angry eyes of a killer troll!!!! I jumped to my feet and raced down a different turn in the tunnel. I skidded around a turn as the troll’s sword came crashing down on where I just stood.

I continued running, searching for any light that could mean way out of the dark tunnels. I could hear the giant troll’s thunderous footsteps gaining behind me. I took a sharp turn behind a column to evade the troll, who ran unknowingly past. I slowed my breathing and stared walking back down the tunnel away from the troll’s direction. Tears stung my eyes as I looked down the dark, hopeless tunnel. I blinked though the tears as a small flash of light sparked in the dark tunnel. Suddenly there was a beautiful glow floating in the air. Once my eyes adjusted to the light I realized I was looking at a fairy!! “Don’t cry” the fairy said, “I can show you the was out.” I whipped the tears away and followed as the fairy fluttered down the tunnel. I new hope sprung in me when I caught a whiff of grass and pine.

We were getting close to the end!! A bright smile spread across my face as the fairy started to hum a bouncy tune. We were coming around the last turn when suddenly a loud cackle reverberated though the tunnel right behind us, followed by a loud growl belonging to the troll. The fairy looked at me with shocked eyes,” run!” My legs sprang to life as I sprinted towards the little crack of light at the end of the tunnel. The cackling of the witch and the loud, booming steps of the troll were getting louder and louder. I started to stumble as the tunnel floor became rough and gravely. The cackling sent shivers down my back as it rang in my ears. I could see out of the tunnel where the opening led into the forest. I was so close to reaching my escape. Suddenly a huge hand slammed into my back, knocking me to the ground. All the air flew out of my lungs and I knew that the troll was right on top of me. I turned over to face my doom. I opened my eyes and found myself in my bed…?

Capturing Video with MovieMaker or VideoTab

Creating Video on the netbook and then moving it to a more robust machine requires the following steps:

Step 1: When a student opens Movie Maker, they need to create a folder on their desktop where they will save all their video clips, music, sound effects, AND the PROJECT. Be sure and edit the properties of the project so that you know exactly where the video clips are being saved. You should look in the desktop folder to make sure you see video clips (AVI or WMV files) and music being saved in that folder as you procede with your project. You should also make sure you see the PROJECT saved in that same folder.

Step 2: When you have completed capturing video, you may wish to move the ENTIRE folder to the network (\\maroon\JR\Blog\ ) so that the PROJECT and ALL the Video Clips stay together.

Step 3: You would need to copy the ENTIRE folder to the desktop of a larger machine where you hope to do some robust editing. If Red Xs appear, all you need to do is point to the location of the missing video clip (the clip that Movie Maker cannot find) by highlighting its location in the folder on the desktop.

NOTE: Movie editors POINT to video clips and they need to know WHERE the video clip actually is. Hopefully, the video clip is in the folder on the desktop and you can redirect the editor to find the clip you need.

    Confidentiality Workshop

Please take time to watch this video and then answer the questions below using the "comment" section of this blogDownload file "Confidentiality3.swf"
    .

Each scenerio below may have TWO parts. (1) Identify whether confidentiality is being violated or not. (2) If yes, then give an explanation as to how YOU would correct the situation.

Example: Teacher A is standing in the hall way and asks Teacher B if he has any special education students in his classes. Is confidentiality being violated? Yes or No

    (A) Yes, because the teachers should not be discussing students under IDEA in the hall. (B) I would tell Teacher A this was not the time or place to discuss students.

    SCENERIOS

    (1) The secretary in the office has constant access to student information as she files records of all the students, acts as attendance clerk and assists with the PEIMS reports that are sent to TEA. What advice can you offer the secretary concerning information she might have access to?

    (2) A parent wanted to inspect her child's achievement test results. She was given her child's test booklet, his individual scoring summary and the class scoring summary to review. She was also shown the district profile for comparison. Were confidentiality procedures violoated? Explain your answer.

    (3) A teacher keeps excellent records on her students. She is very conscienctious about keeping records upt-to-date and takes the time to write down her observations about each child. On closer examination; however, her administrator discovered that her observations contained such statements as "Consuelo comes from a very negligent home. Her mother is lazy and does not work. And "Bruce is a strange boy who often plays with girls' tolys. This is probably because his father is a weak man with very feminine tendencies."

What suggestions would you give this teacher about her recordkeeping?

    (4) A regular and a special education teacher were sitting in the teachers' lounge discussing a child they both taught. They called the child by name and talked about his behavior problems, his family situation and his handicapping condition. Were the teachers violating confidentiality? Explain your answer.

    (5) Teacher A was in her classroom between the bells when Teacher B came in and said, "I want to talk to you about Bobby. He's driving me crazy in social studies class. I don't know how you put up with him; he's the worst kid I've ever seen!" How would you handle this situation if you were Teacher A?

    (6) The school posts on the main office bulletin board a list of all the students who need tutorials. Was confidentiality violated? Explain your answer.

To give your explainations on how to properly handle each of these 6 scenerios, open a comment and identify each scenerio with its appropriate number. Give all the information requested for 6 scenerios inside a single comment section. If you need help, please email me. joy@arpisd.org
