Learning Styles --Relevant??

Current research, commissioned by Psychological Science in the Public Interest, has shown evidence that teaching individual students in their preferred learning style may not have any benefits. With that in mind, let me share with you what I found when researching Learning Styles for my dissertation. I come across a little known paper written by one of Dr Kolb’s students, Dr Miriam Webb. Kolb asked Miriam Weinstein Webb to critique his Learning Styles Theory. In the course of her writing she made it quite clear that for “deep learning” to take place, students should migrate through ALL the Learning Styles…not just a preferred learning style.

When teaching a concept through all the styles, students can apply the concept through multiple models with both physical and mental manipulations and therefore, acquire a deeper understanding of the material. I interpret this to mean that performing a learning styles inventory and deciding what a child prefers is virtually irrelevant for deep learning. A child needs to struggle with the concept in multiple modes in order to acquire lasting knowledge and understanding.

Technology can assist teachers in migrating students through all the learning styles, if lessons are well designed.

I completely agree with this. In music, we try to teach kids the same thing, in many different ways. We may have the kids clap, count, sing, and play the same thing many times so that all the students have a chance to figure out what works best for them.
