MORE FUN with Cell Phones!

Nature Trails Treasure Hunt -- In-the-Field Research using Cell Phones
Steps:
1. Split students up into groups of 3.
2. Give them examples of flora and fauna they should be able to find during their field work.
3. Each specimen that they find, they need to record the GPS location and take a picture of the specimen with their cell phone.
4. Upon returning to the classroom, each group can research information about their specimens and map out its location
You can also use Polleverywhere.com in the field. Students are given the Poll address to send the names of their specimens as they find them. The facilitator is able to watch the poll in the field to see what has been found and who found it first. A game can be made with a point system for each group and how many specimens they find.

FUN with PIRATEPAD

http://piratepad.net will allow you to upload a paper OR type a document and have real-time editors or contributors. Each collaborator chooses their own text color so that everyone knows what they contributed or what they chose to edit. You can chat on the side and discuss changes that need to be made BEFORE you make them to the document. The document can be saved, printed, and shared. Teachers have access to this site, but students will need to have teachers bypass for them on this site because of the chat feature. Because there is a chat feature, please remind your students that all conversations are logged and inappropriate comments are presecutable (local, state, and federal). This is a fantastic tool to use when collaborating on a composition of any type (ie poetry, research paper, handbook, policy, etc). If you need help, email me.

FUN with Cell Phones!

Very EASY polling of classroom students. Free! Put them in groups with one cell phone in each group. Give them a discussion question. Have them Text the answer to your Poll (supplied by the Website). Easy to follow instructions…. http://www.polleverywhere.com/ REMEMBER: “IF WE IGNORE THEIR WORLD, THEY WILL IGNORE US! How to teach 21st Century students….help them explain, express, and explore in the real-world.

Suggested Procedure:

1. Teacher will need to create a Cell Phone Poll that has a very thoughtful (higher-order) question. A question that may have multiple correct answer OR no specific answer that is considered the definitive answer.

2. Have all student place their cell phones down on the desk.

3. Place them in groups with only one cell phone used per group. Have them select a group name.

4. Have them discuss the question and negotiate the best answer

5. Have them text their answer with group name attached.

6. After answer appears, discuss the answers.

7. Have each group defend their answer.

Give student time to disucss and reflect. This helps change an impulsive answer into a more reflective answer.

Once upon a time there was a very hard working computer who lived in a AA-district in East Texas. The pine trees were so inspiring and the school children were a joy to work with. But the computer had a very significant problem...dust bunnies seemed to be continuously and blatantly attracted to Mr Tech Tool, the computer. The dust bunnies were shameless. They approached Mr Computer from all sides. They affixed themselves to his chassis and to the front of his face plate. They invaded his privacy and claimed residence inside his private spaces. They clogged up his internal housing and slowed down his air conditioning unit. When he was listening to iTunes, they danced their way into his heart and caused him to become overheated. As time went by, Mr Too was so congested that he stopped playing iTunes. He stopped sharing media and finally, he gasped his last breath of clean air and died right there in front of everyone during a very important presentation for the boss.

An autopsy was performed and Mr Tech Tool's death was certified as a case of negligent homicide. The guilty parties were classroom teachers! Yes, as the news broke everyone was in shock. School teachers had murdered Mr Tech Tool by sheer neglect. The DA sought the maximum penalty. The cases are still pending in the federal courts.

AUDIO & AUDACITY

Making Podcasts for iPods
Step 1 Watch This Video - Talking Head

Step 2 Make sure you have a microphone attached to your PC. Then Watch this Video

Step 3: Download Audacity & Lame
Audacity is another free program. You will need to download it at: \\maroon\teachers\software\audacity
There are two programs in this Audacity Folder (1) is Audacity and (2) the other is called LameFE
Please download the Audacity first and then the LameFE
Step 4: Watch this video

Step 5: You will want to SAVE your Recording as an MP3. Lame allows you to do this. BUT first you need to tell Audacity where Lame was loaded on your computer. YUCK! Well, its not really that bad..... Lame is located on the C: in Program Files and in the LameFE folder. You just need to browse to

C:\Program Files\LameFE\lame_enc.dll

AND you ONLY need to do that ONCE. Audacity will remember that setting after you point to it one time.
NOTE: When you save in MP3 Format this box pops up so that iPods can display the information while they play the audio. Take some time to fill out this information to help your students select the right MP3 file to listen to.

Step 6: Now that you have several lectures saved....then what?
Uploading MP3

Learning Styles --Relevant??

Current research, commissioned by Psychological Science in the Public Interest, has shown evidence that teaching individual students in their preferred learning style may not have any benefits. With that in mind, let me share with you what I found when researching Learning Styles for my dissertation. I come across a little known paper written by one of Dr Kolb’s students, Dr Miriam Webb. Kolb asked Miriam Weinstein Webb to critique his Learning Styles Theory. In the course of her writing she made it quite clear that for “deep learning” to take place, students should migrate through ALL the Learning Styles…not just a preferred learning style.

When teaching a concept through all the styles, students can apply the concept through multiple models with both physical and mental manipulations and therefore, acquire a deeper understanding of the material. I interpret this to mean that performing a learning styles inventory and deciding what a child prefers is virtually irrelevant for deep learning. A child needs to struggle with the concept in multiple modes in order to acquire lasting knowledge and understanding.

Technology can assist teachers in migrating students through all the learning styles, if lessons are well designed.
