Using Screen Shots & Recordings

There are many times you find information or create information on a computer and you would like to capture it for future use. There are many ways to accomplish this task. We will give you several ways in this lesson.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Approach 1: PC's have a way to capture both the entire screen and a window. To capture the entire screen use the 2-key command Ctrl + Prtscr. This 2-key command places your screen shot in memory. You can use Ctrl+V to paste the resulting picture into a Word document, graphic editor, powerpoint, or email. I pasted this screen shot into a graphic editor and reduced its size (preferrably 300 X 400 pixels for Web use) and then saved it and uploaded it here.

Screen ShotRarely, however do we want to capture the entire screen. It is almost unreadable here. Most of the time we want to only capture a Window. To do this, click on the Window you would like to capture. Reduce its size to the informaiton you are interested in capturing. Then use the 2-key command Alt + Prtscr and paste the resulting picture into a Word Document, Powerpoint, or graphic editor. I recommend a graphic editor so you can save it as a .jpg after you resize and crop it. (see below)

This Window was closed around the Epsilen Menu and captured with the 2-key command (Alt+PrtScr)Window Capture

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Approach 2: There are some great sofware packages and online services that will allow you to capture even more interesting Screen shots. The first package we will use is SNAGIT. The older versions of SNAGIT are free. SNAGIT will allow you to capture an active Menu (which our 2-key commands will not). Here is an example:

Snagit 1SNAGIT will allow you to capture any part of a screen....

Snagit 1You can get SNAGIT from \\maroon\teachers\software OR from Download.com ... In fact if you do a Google search from "free screen capture software" you will find LOTS of programs that will assist you in capturing a screen shot.

----------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT ABOUT SCREEN RECORDING?? What if you want to work a problem or show how a piece of software is used and you would like to record the screen (with video/audio). How would you accomplish that? Again there are several approaches.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Approach 2: Google "free screen recording software". The one I use is Camtasia. There is also a free version of that.

Free Studio also allows you to caputer the screen. Free Studio

You can also use ANY of your interactive tools to record your screen (Smartboard, Mimio, Document Camera, Wireless Tablets). If you have one of these devices, look through the software to see how to record the screen with audio. You can use YouTube to learn your interactive tools. Have an eBEAM? Don't know how to use it? Google a tutorial for it!!! Takes you straight to YouTube and an instructional video on how to use your tool.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Approach 3: Use your laptop Web Cam to record a message for your students. At least once a semester, you need to give them a "talking head" video. Please limit these as they are usually VERY boring...but on occasion students what to know who they are interacting with online.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Approach 4: Scheduling a SKYPE synchronous meeting with students is more difficult to fit into everyone's schedules. But you can use this type of tool to demonstrate 3-D experiments/objects or models and so there are times when it may be of value. Online synchronous communications such as chats or Webinars are much more difficult to schedule and should be used sparingly with hybrid courses.

School Web Lockers: How to

All students and teachers now have the opportunity to save their work in the "cloud" so that it is accessible from anywhere at any time on any machine.

Here are the instructions about how to get started.

The first time they log in, they have a “strange” username. The password is the exact same as this username.

Have students write down the first letter of their first real name and the last four letters of their last name then their regular username

Ex: jrous17roussj

This will be both username and password to get into SWL the first time. Once they are in, they need to:

(1) Edit their username and password back to their network username and password

(2) Supply their email address joy@arpisd.org

(3) And click “UPDATE”

(4) Go to “MY HOME FOLDER” and create subfolders for each core subject area

(5) Create a folder on the desktop called “MYSTUFF”

(6) Create a Word document and name it IMPORTANT.doc and save it in “MYSTUFF” folder on desktop

(7) Practice uploading Important.doc into each of the subfolders.

(8) Practice sharing

(9) Practice deleting Important.doc

PS: When we put NEW students in we user only their regular username (Ex: 17roussj) as both their username and password for the initial login and then they can change their password.

Once you are in SWL, if you go into the SHARE tab there is a training folder with a PowerPoint for students and one for teachers on how to use SWL effectively.

SHARING FOLDERS IN DROPBOX

You may find that you want to share files among teachers and students using your DropBox Account. Before you do this, please be aware that folks you share your folder with can remove the items from the folder. So my recommendation is to copy files from a non shared folder into the shared folder (using copy and paste) so that you have an extra copy of whatever you are sharing.
Here are the steps.
(1) Click on your Dropbox Icon in the Task Tray

(2) Click on Launch Dropbox Website

(3) Create a folder you want to Share

(4) OR Select Share an existing folder (if you do this....make sure you make a copy of your files)

Click Next and supply the email address of the person who you wish to share this folder.

Click Share and that person will receive an email which they just have to "accept" the share if they are already a Dropbox customer. That FOLDER will now appear in their DropBox as if it was something they created. Email me if you have questions.

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTI)

When LoTI first came out, the LoTI stood for Levels of Technology Integration. The title intimidated some folks so the title was changed to Level of Teaching Innovation, all the same standards and procedures. Added to this was H.E.A.T.
  • High Level Thinking Processes
  • Engaging Students
  • Authentic Connections
  • Technology Tools

Level 0 Video: Example of being out of date! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4nwe7cW_og What if students were as far behind as some teachers?

Teaching at the lower levels of LoTI is like teaching on a low resolution television. Students will remember a little of the information, possibly, like for instance, there were people in this picture, but they won't remember much else, like the details and supporting facts. Using technology appropriately in the classroom helps students to become more engaged and to hold on to information longer with deeper understanding.

As you move up in levels, class time moves from lecture to Doing, Interacting, and Productivity

21st Century Students need to be able to:

--Gather Data

--Evaluate Data

--Analyze Data

--Summarize data

--Write and Publish the results using a method that is personally important
