A&P: The Human Cell

Learning about the cells that make up the human body leads to learning about the bodies tissues. We will look at the Structure and Function of human cells and movement across the plasma membrane and how this affects homeostasis.

A&P: General Anatomy, Anatomical Position & Homeostasis

Students, welcome to Anatomy and Physiology.

You will be able to use this blog to find useful information, worksheets, notes, and other documents that will aid you in your learning of the human body and how it works. In most cases you will acquire your notes and handouts from this blog. When using Mr. Shieldes blog you will need to click the appropriate tags that will take you to the most current blog entries, ie "anatomy & physiology" and the "month."

We will begin our study with general terminology and descriptions of the human body. We will look briefly at the systems that make up the body and their general functions. And lastly we will look at Homeostasis and how it regulates all these systems and allows them to work together.

Biology: Safety & Scientific Method

Students, welcome to Mr. Shieldes' Biology 1 Class
This site will become very useful to you throughout the year. You will be able to find Powerpoints, Notes, Worksheets and other materials from the Biology Units covered in class. This blog will be your resource for acquiring these important documents for class. You will be able to download them to your computers and keep them for later use.

Bio Unit 01: Science Safety and Evidence Based Thinking

This unit is about science safety and methodology.

Concepts and Key Understandings
Laboratory Safety Rules
Lab Safety Symbols
Lab Equipment
Scientific Method: 5 steps, control, dependent variable, independent variable, constant, etc...
Accuracy vs Precision
Quantitative vs Qualitative
Hypothesis vs Theory
General lab measurements

Guiding Questions

Science investigations are conducted in a safe manner with considerations for resource conservation. This increases the quality of the investigation, decreases risk to the investigator, and lessens negative impact on the environment.

  • Why should safety be a top priority when conducting investigations?
  • Why should we conserve resources when conducting investigations?
Scientific problem solving and critical thinking processes improve the ability to make informed decisions.

  • Why should investigations be conducted using consistent methodology?
  • Describe the procedures used to conduct a controlled experiment.
  • How has scientific research impacted our lives?

Animals

For Kingdom Animalia we will cover both general characteristics of animals and then dive deeper into the 9 different phyla. Covering sponges and jelly fish, to worms and oysters, to insects and humans, we will look at the different structures and characteristics that make up each phylum and how they influence the world around us.

Plants

In this unit we will be learning about Kingdom Plantae, the plants. Plants are divided up into many groups, such as vascular and non vascular plants, seed and seedless, gymnosperms and angiosperms, monocots and dicots. We will look at each of the groups and learn about how and why they are classified the way they are and what structures make them unique.

We will also be doing a plant project. The assignment and notes that will help and guide you through this project are found below.

Cell Division, Mitosis & Meiosis

In this section we will be learning about the two ways a cell divides. Mitosis is the process by which somatic (body) cells divide and create identical new cells that look like the original parent cell. Meiosis is the process by which gametes (sex) cells are produced.

The Cell Part 2 Unit 3

As we start the 2nd Six Weeks we are going to continue with our study of the cell. We will be looking at the Cell Membrane and how it regulates Homeostasis in the cell. We are going to learn about Diffusion and Osmosis and look at how molecules move into and out of the cell through the Cell Membrane. I am including the standard notes in pdf format as well as several worksheets we are going to be completing over the remainder of this unit.

Biology: The Cell Part 1 Structure & Function

For this unit we will be breaking up the material into two parts. The first will cover the cell parts known as organelles and their functions, the differences between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells, the differences between Plant and Animal Cells, and the Cell Theory. I am including the notes, vocab, and several of the powerpoints that will be used during our learning of this material.

Biochemistry Unit 2

Unit 2 starts with a review of chemistry. I hope that you already know the basics, for example parts of an atom, types of chemical bonds, balancing equations, etc..... But if you don't, or if you need a good review, i have attached some notes and worksheets below that you can look at or print that i hope will help you fill in gaps that you may have. Also come to tutorials if extra help is needed.

Our primary focus on this unit will be on the 4 basic biomolecules found in living things. (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids) These molecules are organic (contain carbon) and provide the body with the energy, the building blocks of cells and even the genetic information to who you are.
