Sample Interview Questions

Here are some questions that might get you started thinking about what you would like to ask... a good suggestion would be to ask the person anything you haven't been able to find online; so you might want to look at your outline to see what questions you weren't able to address.

Hey! Here's the plan!

Ok, during the next two days with the sub, here is what you're supposed to accomplish:
Turn in last night's homework - revision of a Familiar Place description.
Write about a memory. The more detail and time you put into the first draft, the less work for your later...
Trade with a partner. Have that partner circle/underline all your TO BE and HELPING verbs. Revise and eliminate by 1/2, just like you did with the Familiar Place.
Trade with another partner. Have that partner locate 5-10 places where you could add sensory adjectives or vivid verbs to your story. Revise.
Trade with yet another partner. Have that partner look for sentence variety. Revise to include more sofisticated sentence variety.
Turn in ALL 4 DRAFTS by the end of the day Friday. If you have extra time, read or work on other work quietly!
Thanks and have a great weekend!

Non-Fiction, Good Diction

Open the powerpoint and start with your bell ringer...

Download file "non_fic.pptx"

THEN, read AT LEAST two of the following non-fiction essays/speeches and be prepared to take a quiz tomorrow!

Download file "Shunned.docx" This is a woman's story who is shunned by everyone she knew after getting pregnant at 16.

Download file "Pleasure_of_books.docx" This is a man's appeal for the enjoyment and treasure of reading.

Download file "JFK_inagural_address.docx" John F. Kennedy's first speech as President.

Download file "I_have_a_dream.docx" Yes, the famous Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech.

Download file "I_am_the_first_accused.docx" Nelson Mandella's opening speech at his trial for treason.

Download file "Ain't_I_a_woman.docx" Soujourner Truth's speech to the National Women's Convention in 1851.

For tomorrow, be considering what it is that makes a speaker/writer persuasive and engaging. What do you want to hear when you listen to someone speaking for a prolonged amount of time? What makes you interested in what people have to say? Are there gimmicks that keep your attention? Are there any of these elements in the selections you read today? Do the selections have anything in common?

Please select one of these songs, and as you listen to it, write down any thoughts, images, memories, or ideas that come to your mind as you listen. PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THE VIDEOS AS YOU LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!!! I don't want your perception to be swayed by the images the video makers selected!
Your assignment will be to design a power point with at least 5 pictures and 5 corresponding words that acurately portray specific diction to describe the feeling. You will also need to create a Works Cited page for each of the images you use in your presentation.

Difference in Diction

Diction is defined as "word choice." Most good writing depends on the author's ability to choose the best word to express his thought.
Often, the bell ringers will be asking you to compare two words that either sound similar, or have similar meanings with slight differences... or both!
Here are two examples of bell ringers that deal with literary terms you should know!
Download file "skim_scan.pptx"
If you will consider milk and shopping as an analogy to remember these definitions, it might help:
  • skim milk is made by allowing the fat to rise to the top of the milk where it is then skimmed off, creating a healthier, but much less tasty beverage... skimming a reading selection allows you to gather the main ideas, or 'the good stuff' from a quick overview.
  • scanning a bar code of a product gives you specific information about that item, like what it is and how much is costs... scanning a reading selection is an effort to find particular information in the article, story, advertisment, etc.
Download file "synthesizing_summarizing.pptx"
  • According to Bloom's Taxonomy (rendered as a butterfly below) synthesizing - creating new ideas from the combined analysis and assessment of pre-existing ideas - is of the highest level of cognition (define this word for me and I'll give you bonus points) whereas summarizing - a general retelling of main points - is on the lower levels.

Download file "synthesizing_def.docx"

  • At first glance these defintions may look better suited for a science lesson, especially the second that shows Chemistry in italics, indicating where that definition should be applied. However, consider that the word 'element' can have multiple meanings in different academic areas and use the first definition for our purposes in English IV.
Although these words may look and sound similar, they have subtle differences that greatly affect their meaning so beware the SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT trap! (see below...)
A funny side note: When I was in Thailand the street vendors would try to sell very similar items. If you looked at one thing in one vendor's stall, the next vendor would try to draw your attention to their booth by yelling, SAME SAME!! (and when you looked over at him, say) BUT DIFFERENT! This picture reminds me a little of that...

SAME SAME, BUT DIFFERENT!

POV can be divided into 3 main branches:

  • 2nd person - (the most complex) where the narrator is aware of the reader - Common pronouns used are: You, though it is in addressing the audience
  • 3rd person - where the narrator is removed from the story - Common pronouns used are: He, she, they, them, their
    • 3rd person omniscient - the narrator is aware of the outward actions, inner thoughts and feelings of ALL characters
    • 3rd person subjective/limited - the narrator is limited to only one chracter's inner thoughts and feelings, but can still observe the outer actions of all characters
    • 3rd person objective - the narrator only see the outer actions of the chracters and knows no inner thoughts or feelings of any characte
